S1- Faclitate and inspire student learning and creativity

Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.

a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness

b. Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources

c. Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes

d. Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments

Standard 1a- Standard 1a- One example of this standard is a presentation that I created to teach the chemistry concept of solutions. Through this PowerPoint, students can hear a narrative story that addresses vocabulary and big idea concepts about solutions. This presentation helps students become actively involved in the learning process and engages them in multiple sensory learning. The story is told through images, audio, animation as well as written text. This PowerPoint takes a story book to the next level through the use of technology. As an extension for an upper elementary classroom, I may ask students to create their own stories using a science concept. This presentation could serve as a model for students when creating their own stories.

Standard 1d - For this standard, I have included a PowerPoint presentation that was made using Second Life.  Second Life is a virtual world developed by Linden Lab. Through this program you can create a character and interact in a virtual world. This PowerPoint leads students through a tour of an animal cell. For example, to represent the cell membrane the tour compares it to a fence around a house. Within the presentation, are images taken from Second Life showing a cell from many different viewpoints.   This presentation could be used for an interactive class discussion on parts of an animal cell. Connecting parts of the cell to concrete images that a student will understand can help aid in memory of the topic. Creating this resource helped me to connect abstract ideas of a cell to concrete images. This activity was enhanced by the technology because of the images taken from the virtual world, Second Life. I would use this presentation in an upper elementary classroom when discussing parts of a cell. For further studying I could also lead students on a tour within Second Life. Students could create a character and explore exsisting enviroments such as an animal cell.  This allows you to see the cell from all angles in three dimensional spaces.
